Individuality (in dog’s πŸ˜‰)

In a world where everyone is different why try to be the same??!

Individually is something unique, it makes us who we are, the world would be so boring if we were all just carbon copies of eachother!

We have all had experience of it in our lives, that person who tries to emulate everything you do!…Let them and take it as a massive compliment (if you wasn’t your awesome self they would have no reason to copy would they? πŸ˜‰)…

Here is the thing…. Embrace your individuality – people can copy you all they like but it’s your individuality that sets you world’s apart from everyone else! Personality can’t be copied! ……….

So, where am I going with this you may wonder?… What has human individuality got to do with dog’s?!

So with what I’ve said above, take note:

Dog’s are individuals too!!

No 2 dog’s are the same, not even ones of the same breed. They all have a individual personality with quirks, struggles and strengths and by recognising this we can easily build on this in their training!

OK, so picture the scene… Your in class and all the other dogs just seem to get it, but yours is the one who is basking in the slip of sunshine peeking through, or maybe the one refusing to move off the floor! Maybe they are barking constantly or maybe even deciding now is the time to pretend you’ve never practiced any of the homework set from last week but they have been doing it perfectly at home!

Your heart is racing and you begin to get stressed! …. Don’t worry! Relax!

It’s nothing we haven’t seen before, even our own dog’s can have off days!

If we are stressed the dog picks up on this and thinks there is something to be stressed about and it can soon become a circle of negative emotions for both you and the dog. Where is the fun in that?!

I’m pretty sure you got a dog to enjoy, to have fun with, to be a loving companion and family member? Where is the fun if stress is involved?

Dog’s are individuals just like us! They all learn at different rates. If the dog is struggling with a task it’s simple, we just make that task easier!

Don’t put pressure on yourself or your dog to get it right and just enjoy the journey of learning together. We are there to help you enjoy your dog training and learn you the skills you need to achieve amazing results.

There really is no rush, in fact if things are rushed then you often find the dog can sometimes forget the earlier steps which then can hinder later learning. We always go at THE DOG’S pace in our classes. If we try to rush the dog’s learning they fastly lose confidence and we want to build confident happy dog’s both in our training sessions and in their home and everyday life.

A confident happy dog learns faster!

We find when new handlers and owners 1st come to a new class they can be so fixated on all the negative things the dog is doing that they then miss all the good things that the dog does!

It’s common, I’ve even been there with my own dog in classes that are so regimented that you begin to think your in the army!!

Those classes where your tutted or stared at if your dog is having an off day, those classes where it feels like no one wants you to do well and certainly nothing is said if you do it right….. hold on…. you may get a stern “very good” from the trainer, but that’s on a very good day! Meanwhile the other class members look on in discust, maybe mutter things under their breath like “the dog is having an unusually good day”

I dislike those classes so much and it’s certainly not us!!

We love dog training and certainly give the dog and handlers lots of praise for getting it right, why not? It feels good to succeed doesn’t it? We love it when the dog succeeds, no matter how small the success, it’s why we do what we do!

Success should be celebrated! Throw a verbal party aswell as their reward (food/ toy) when your dog gets it right, no matter how small the success and watch your dog’s confidence grow! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

Dog training should be FUN! and that means for both the dog and owner! If your not happy then how can you expect your dog to be?

We pride ourselves on running fun, relaxed, friendly and welcoming classes where you and your dog will achieve fantastic results and you will make lots of like minded friends along the way.

Till next time,

Katrina 🐾
